Play MUGEN Characters in the Browser — No Install
For more than two decades, playing MUGEN characters meant downloading a local engine, unpacking files into the right folders, and hoping everything was configured correctly. Tarunk Engine changes that: load MUGEN-compatible characters and battle in your browser — no install, no download, no setup.
What Does "MUGEN-Compatible" Mean?
A MUGEN character is defined by five plain-text and binary formats:
.cns— state definitions (the character's state machine: idle, walk, jump, attacks, get-hit).sff— sprite data (images plus their axis/anchor points).air— animation definitions (how sprites play in sequence).snd— sound definitions (hits, K.O., voice lines).cmd— command definitions (input combos like quarter-circle-forward)
Tarunk Engine reads these original file formats directly — that is what "MUGEN-compatible" means here. No conversion, no re-export, no plugin. If a character was built for MUGEN or Ikemen GO, it will almost certainly run on Tarunk too.
How to Play MUGEN Characters in Your Browser
- Open the Tarunk Engine play page.
- Drag & drop a character
.zipor.rar(up to 200MB) straight onto the screen — or pick one of the built-in template characters. - Select your fighters and press start.
That is the whole flow. The engine resolves the state machine, hitboxes, animations, sound, and AI in real time — at 60fps, inside your tab.
Built-In Templates to Try Right Now
No files handy? The engine ships with two original characters you can play immediately:
- TARUNK Bot — the free template character with 241 sprites, 117 animations, and 58 states (read the full showcase)
- TARUNK Ember — a second original fighter with its own palette
Both are fully playable and perfect for testing the engine before you dig out your own character collection.
Honest Compatibility Notes
- Your files are processed 100% in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server, so your characters stay private.
- The free tier includes one custom character upload; upgrade to Pro or Enterprise for unlimited uploads.
- Standard
.cns/.sff/.air/.snd/.cmdwork out of the box. Exotic engine-specific hacks from the classic era may behave differently — we target the mainstream MUGEN 1.1 feature set. - Stages and BGM are supported too — drop a full stage zip alongside your fighters.
Create Your Own Characters
Playing is only half the story. Tarunk Studio turns a MUGEN-compatible character into a visual editor: drag hitboxes, reorder animations, edit state machines, and export your build — all in the browser. New here? Start with the command grab tutorial or remix the TARUNK Bot template.
Finished characters can be published to the Assets Store — free or paid, with wallet payouts.
